Fired! Study on Unemployment Benefits for Church Employees
Do Church Employees Get Unemployment Benefits?
June 20, 2009"There's an art and a science to the human resources function. The art component is critical. The church should represent the best practice for all corporations in America, but we're just not there yet."
View this ArticleThe National Assocation of Church Personnel Administators (NACPA) recently conducted a study of diocesan human resource personnel to determine whether or not they were providing unemployment benefits for Church employees. By law, Churches do not have to contribute to the fund for unemployment benefits, according to an article posted by the National Catholic Reporter. The NACPA study determined that out of the 45 dioceses that responded to the survey about half do participate in the fund, and half don't.
According to Dr. Mary Jo Moran, Executive Director of NACPA, approximately 100 dioceses have a full-time human resource professional. "The church's own standard is for every 100 employees, there should be one full-time human resource professional," says Moran.
